FIFA World Cup- By Vivek Madasu

FIFA World Cup

Did you know that  the  FIFA World Cup was the most watched sport event in history? The World cup is an interesting event and I watched it this year. Let me share some facts about it.
The World cup is a soccer championship in which every country in the world plays. It is hosted every four years and it is hosted by a different country each time. The first World cup  was in Uruguay. The first World cup trophy shows FIFA president Jules Rimet on it. After Brazil took home the World cup in 1970, a new trophy was needed. An Italian sculptor named Silvio Gazzaniga created a new contemporary design but it featured “winged victory”. The country that won the most World cups  so far is Brazil. The country that won the first World cup was Uruguay. Some of the best  players ever to play  in the World cup are Pele of Brazil, Diego Maradona of Argentina, Zinedine Zidane of France, and Ronaldo of Brazil.
This year the World cup was in South Africa. It was the first World cup to be hosted by an African country. This year Spain were the victors, Holland (or the Netherlands) were the runners-up, Germany came in third place, and Uruguay came in fourth place.
I hope you learned a few facts about this soccer championship. Can you share some facts about another sporting event that you like?

Meerkats- by Anish

Meerkats dens:by Anish

Do you know about Meerkats ? Well here is some interesting information about meerkats. After reading this you will really like meerkats.
Meerkats are small animals that dig a lot. They have dens under the ground. Meerkats live together in dens. They sometimes share the den with the yellow mongoose and the ground squirrel. Their dens have about 70 holes to enter from. that”s a lot of holes! they are  members of the mongoose family. A meerkat family could be called a clan, mob or gang. A big clan of meerkats are called super families with about 50 members,a regular group of meerkats  have about 20 members. They could live for 12 years to 14 years. In  Dutch, meerkat means lake cat. It’s also known as sun angel, so it is believed that they protect people from the werewolf which eats cattle and tribesman. They only weigh 731 grams! their belly is black so it can absorb heat in the morning  after a cold night so it won’t be cold. They’re about only 10 inches tall! Their claws are two inches long for digging an making their dens. Meerkats eat scorpions, worms, spiders, snakes, lizards, small mammals, plants, eggs and other stuff. When they eat animals with venom they don’t get hurt. They could have 5-6 pups in one litter, but 3 is the most common amount of pups in a litter.
Have you seen and fed meerkats in a zoo?

Black Friday- By Eric Wu

Hi everybody! Did you guys know that the Friday after Thanksgiving is Black Friday? Black Friday is supposed to be the start of the Christmas shopping season. It was originally called Black Friday because when everybody is out shopping, there are so many people so there are sometimes traffic accidents and even violence. Now, it is called Black Friday because the accountants at the stores use black pen to show profit and red pen to show loss of profit. The “black” in Black Friday is supposed to be mean a profitable day for the people at the store. On Black Friday, stores open extra early and give items really low prices, like 50% off and stuff like that.  Sometimes, people even camp outside the stores so they can be the first people to enter the store. I even read on the news that ToysR’Us opened at 10:00 P.M. on Thursday night! Isn’t that crazy? The things people do to get money! Well, enough about that. What do you guys think about Black Friday? Would you go and risk getting trampled if you had chance? Or would you stay home and watch other people trample each other on the news? Please tell us!

My Favorite Season- By Eesha Deepak

Favorite Season by Eesha Deepak

My favorite season is spring. The first reason is that it brings a new life. New leaves grow on trees, colorful flowers start growing on plants, and fruits on trees start ripening. Worker bees pollinate and produce seeds for the plants but get nectar for themselves to turn into honey. Air is filled with the odor of the pollen. All the flowers and plants look refreshing. Beautiful butterflies fly all around. Many animals come out of hibernation. The second reason is that days are longer and kids get to play outside, go on walks and ride bicycles. The cold and rainy winter gets over. Flu viruses do not thrive anymore and do not make us sick. The weather is pleasant. What is your favorite season and why? Please answer for our class to know.

Vehicles- by Aaron Ho

 Vehicles

Does everyone have a favorite vehicle? Well, my favorite vehicles are the Panavia Tornado and the Lockheed  F117A Stealth fighter. The Panavia Tornado has 'swing' wings that can pivot backwards and forwards. The forward position is for take-off and landing because it gives plenty of lift when the aeroplane is moving slowly. After take-of the wings are swept back for high-speed flight. The Lockheed is meant to be invisible to radar systems. The F117A's flat surfaces and the special paint help scatter enemy radar signals, making it very difficult to track. Those are my favorite planes. Now my favorite cars are the Hawaiin Fire Department's custom built fire truck. This truck was originally made in 1940, and is powered by two jet engines taken from aircraft! It can reach more than 400 miles per hour and is the fastest truck on Earth. My second favorite car is the low rider because it is a type of customized car. These cars look as if they've been squashed. In fact, section of the car above the doors is removed, and the suspension is lowered. Low riders can also jump in the air. The customized suspension fitted to these cars allows the body to be set at different heights. The suspension is so powerful that drivers can literally make their cars jump up and down. Please tell us all about the vehicles that you like and remember a vehicle can be a motorcycle, a car, a plane, a boat, etc.

Halloween- by Abhinav Naikawadi

Halloween
By Abhinav Naikawadi

Hi Room 24! How many of you are going trick or treating this Halloween? I sure am. Do you know the history of Halloween? Halloween originated over 2000 years ago. It was first a Celtic holiday called Samhain (Sah-ween) in Ireland, celebrated on October 31st, the last day of the Celtic calendar. On this day when the dead can return to the earth, ancient Celts would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off these roaming ghosts. They believed the souls of the dead roamed the streets and villages at night. So, treats were left to pacify the evil and make sure next year crops would be surplus. This tradition evolved into trick-or-treating. Later the Romans had a similar holiday called Pagan to honor the dead. Then the Catholics named this festival “All Hallows Eve”, which later got renamed “Halloween” for short.
Over time, Halloween started to get less and less religious and more of a fun sort of festival. It is a time of joy, fun, variety of costumes for all ages, some are spooky and others slightly funny. There are pumpkin patches, parades, parties, and my personal favorite, trick-or-treating. One really important part of Halloween is the candy or chocolates. Hmmm…Yummy! It is probably one of kid’s favorite parts of Halloween. A famous symbol of Halloween is a pumpkin, which is carved with a demon face to scare away evil spirits. These carved pumpkins are called jack-o-lanterns. Often there is a candle placed inside to brighten it up. Many people also put up spooky decor such as gravestones, coffins, fake monsters, etc. What do you like best about Halloween? What are you going to be for Halloween? Have you put any decor up and if so what? Anyways, Happy Halloween!!!!

Taekwondo- By Shrirang

Taekwondo
Did you know that taekwondo is a self defense art? Taekwondo is a martial art that comes from Korea. Similar to Taekwondo are other martial arts such as Karate and Kung Fu. I am learning Taekwondo since Kindergarten, and I am on my way to test for Brown Belt. This belt is just one level below the Black Belt.

I want to share some self defense kicking tips that I learnt in Taekwondo.  Anyone who learns these simple tips can protect from danger.  If you are walking on a side walk which looks like it hasn’t been walked on, and a person comes up with a gun or knife and tells you to give all the money you have in your pocket, one way is try running away from him. If you can’t run away your only resort is fighting. There are many ways to fight and one of the ways is kicking. Kicking is a skill that we learnt in Taekwondo. You can kick hard on the body of the intruder. There are many places on the body that you kick, to knock the enemy. You can kick hard in the abdomen, chest or the area below the stomach or above the thighs called groin. All these spots on the body get hurt easily. After kicking you can run away.  There are several type of kicks such as side kick, round horse kick, axe kick, snap kick, outside-inside or inside-outside kick. By learning these kicks one can protect when in danger. Kicking is just one form of self defense. We also learnt other forms that I can share some other time. I feel confident by know these simple tricks.

Favoite Animal- Mandar Matkar

Favorite Animal

Hey guys. Ever wonder what your favorite animal is? Mine is the GRAY WOLF. Here are some facts about them. First of all I had no idea they are least concerned of extinction. I was so surprised about that because they’re endangered species, but when I read some more about it said only humans and tigers are their predators. Wolves live, travel and hunt in packs of 4-7 animals on average. Packs include the mother and father wolves, called the alphas, their pups and several other subordinate or young animals. The alpha female and male are the pack leaders that track and hunt prey. They can run 34 to 38 miles for more than 20 minutes. Since they are social predators they are almost undefeatable. Another fact is that even though wolves are ancestors of dogs, 1.8% is dog. They can also slow the flow of blood to conserve heat. Pretty clever for a wolf! Now it’s your turn to tell about your favorite animal.

Thanks
Mandar Matkar

The Moon Festival By: Clara Y.

Did  you do anything for the moon festival? If you did, how did you  celebrate it?  If you didn't, is
there any festival that you celebrated  that is close to this time?  How did you celebrate your festival?

Hey everyone! A few days ago, it was a crispy clear Autumn night.  The
moon was as round as a big bouncing ball.  That night, my parents went  outside
to see the moon and set up a table and chairs in our backyard.   They told my
brother  and I to come outside to watch the moon.  I saw a big and bright moon
and I also saw a shining planet a few miles away  from the moon.  It was
Jupiter.  We celebrated the moon festival.  My mom offered us moon cakes and
some tea.   I sipped delicate tea and tried different kinds of moon cakes.  It
was  so good!  My dad started to tell us ancient Chinese stories about the
moon.  It was  really fun watching the moon and listening to the lovely and
touching story about the queen who flew to the moon.  It was getting cold
outside so we went back in.  There are three major Chinese festivals.  Chinese
New Year, Lantern Festival, and the Moon Festival.  They are all really fun so I
can't wait for the next festival, Chinese New Year!  Did  you do anything for
the moon festival? If you did, how did you  celebrate it?  If you didn't, is
there any festival that you celebrated  that is close to this time?  How did you
celebrate your festival? Please tell us!

Air Pollution- by Shrila

Air Pollution
Hey guys! Did you ever hear about our environment being extremely bad and all? I'm pretty sure you have. Lately, our environment has become horrible. One of the reasons why it is so bad, is because of air pollution. Air pollution pollutes the air (hence its name), which is very bad for the world. The air is being polluted because of the cars we are using! Many people have told me how much cars pollute the environment, but I didn't take it seriously. I used to think, "Oh what does it matter! You can barely see any bad air coming out of the car! It probably doesn't matter too much!". Then, one day my mom was driving me to school during winter. I was just sitting here, when I noticed a car that was running in a house, and nobody was inside it. Normally, I couldn't see any smoke or anything come out of the car, but since it was winter, I saw a LOT of bad gases entering the air. It was "pouring" out of the car! I was astonished! All of that bad air is going into the air that we breath! Doesn't that worry you? That's when I started to understand the meaning of what everybody tells me about air pollution. That's when I understood that we have to try to stop this. When we do careless mistakes such as leaving the car running when you are not there, that one time will affect the environment a lot. We all have to take action of our own environment. Another way to help the environment, is to get an energy-saving car. People have made such cars, that save a lot of energy. Buggies save lots of energy. If everyone starts to use energy-saving vehicles, then our environment will get a lot better. Some other ways to stop air pollution, is to try to walk or bike to school. If you live anywhere close by, try walking. It's actually really fun. That way, you will get exercise, have fun, and stop air pollution. Do you know any other ways to stop air pollution? Have you ever walked or biked to school? Please share your comments to the class.

Bermuda Triange- by Justin

Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle is the greatest mystery to me. The Bermuda Triangle lies between Miami, Florida, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Planes and ships vanish there. One famous vanishing in the Bermuda Triangle is flight 19.  The date of the disappearance is 9/6/1945. Five TBM Avenger torpedo bombers vanished during United Stats Navy overwater navigation training flight. All nine airmen on the flight died as well as the 12-crew member of a PBM Mariner flying boat that is assumed to have exploded in mid-air while searching for flight 19. Another incident in the Bermuda Triangle is the USS Cyclops on 3/4/1918. It is a Navy boat. 309 people died. Another disappearance in the Bermuda Triangle is a Douglass DC-3 passenger plane, number NC16002. It disappeared on 9/28/1948. Not a single trace of the aircraft was ever found or the 32 passengers. There are many more incidents. You can read about them on this hyperlink: Bermuda Triangle Do you know any other incidents. If so tell us. We’ll be glad to know.

Favorite recess Activity- By Vincent Hwang

Favorite Recess Activity
One of my favorite recess and lunch activities is playing soccer on the field. There are
many people playing and being goalie is pretty fun. If you’re goalie, and you’re strong
enough, you might be able to kick the ball across the field. Sometimes it is room 24 vs.
all the other people. It is very hard to make the goal because the goal is very small. I
sometimes play offense or defense, but I mostly play offense. In the middle of the game,
I sometimes will be temporarily goalie. Another activity I do is play basketball I rarely
play basketball because all my friends play soccer. If I do play basketball, I play a game
called Lightning. Those are my favorite activities at recess and lunch. What are your
favorite recess activities and why?

Long Weekend -by Rakhi

Long weekend
By Rakhi

Hey everybody! I wonder what you all did over the long weekend. Well, I'll tell you what I did. I went boating and to the beach. I went to the Russian River to go boating. My friend's families came with us. Some of us went canoeing and some went kayaking. I went canoeing. We switched positions every time we stopped. The first time we stopped my dad got out of the canoe and got in a single kayak. After a while we saw him in the water. He fell out! I came to see if he was alright. He was fine but we had to send someone out to get the boat and paddle. That's why I stayed in a canoe all the time. Another day we went to the beach. We saw harbor seals. They are cuter than regular seals according to me.  On that beach there were lots of tide pools you could go into and see small or large animals. We saw this huge starfish about the size of my dad's hand. I think that was worth coming to that beach. This beach was more of a seeing beach. Since there was so many tide pools you could not really swim in it. Also the beach had sand that was mixed in with rocks so we didn't take of our shoes. I can't wait to have our three day weekend again. What did you do over the three-day weekend? Are you looking foward to the next one?

Germany- By Joshua Wong

My dad is in Aachen, Germany on a business trip. He tells me that it is always dark, cloudy, and drizzling, even now in the summer. If you are from California , you will miss California ’s sunny weather. Next, the fruits in Germany don’t taste as good as here in California. The people there have a lot of canned fruits. The Germans don’t have as much fresh fruits as we do. They also seem to eat a lot of potatoes. In addition, things in Germany are very expensive. For example, a Big Mac meal costs 5 euros which is about $6.50 USD. Last, , most of the shops are closed on Sundays. And on Saturdays, most shops close at 7 o’clock .
Have you been to Europe? If not, have you gone to any other foreign country? Was there anything very different from California?

My favorite Genre -By Siddesh Shankar

By Siddesh Shankar

My favorite genre of books is fantasy.  I like the series “Beast Quest.”  Beast Quest is about two kids who fight monsters who are cursed by an evil dude.  When the kids kill the monsters, they get special abilities such as resistance to fire, ice, etc.  I like the series because it looks like they are always on an adventure.  In one of books, they defeat a centaur (half-man half-horse) and get a horseshoe, which helps them to summon the centaur and getaway at lightning speed. Also, I enjoy reading comics.  My favorites are Calvin and Hobbes, Garfield, and Little Lulu to name a few.  They are very funny and can cheer you up.  When I’m bored of reading serious books, I read comics for a change.  Now, I also read comics in the Sunday paper. What is your favorite book/series? Do you like comics or not? Why or why not?

Summer Vacation -By Lynn

                                                      Summer Vacation!!!
                                                              By: Lynn

Hey everybody! Summer has just ended and school has started. I am happy that school started, but I also wish that summer could be longer. Over summer I went to visit all my cousins in India! In India, I went to two places for a visit. One place was called Goa. That place is famous for it’s beaches. I went to another place called Puducherry. It is a French town in India. I had a lot of fun there. I was so beautiful and I went to see a lot of temples and churches. I mainly stayed in a place called Mumbai. That’s where all of my cousins live. I played a lot with my 9 year old cousin and also spent a lot of time watching Tom and Jerry. For my whole summer vacation, I was in India. What did you do over summer vacation? Did you have fun? I did.
