Tornados
by Joshua Kim
Firefighters from Washington, Illinois, stand near flattened and
damaged homes after a tornado swept through the town on November 17.
This damage was caused by the deadly tornado. It is most common in a
place called Tornado Alley, which includes Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and
Nebraska. This is how a tornado occurs:
1. One way the rotation appears to happen is when winds at two different altitudes blow at two different speeds creating wind shear. For example, a wind at 1000 feet above the surface might blow at 5mph and a wind at 5000 feet might blow at 25mph. This causes a horizontal rotating column of air.
2. If this column gets caught
in a supercell updraft, the updraft tightens the spin and it
speeds up (much like a skater's spins faster when arms are
pulled close to the body). A funnel cloud is created.
3. The rain and hail in the thunderstorm cause the
funnel to touch down creating a tornado. The tornado then is
pushed by the wind and causes destruction to anything in it's path.
Many devastating events happened when tornados strike. For example, In Michigan, two people were killed and 500,000 homes and businesses lost power. In Indiana, 12 counties reported either tornadoes or storm damage and tens of thousands of homes went dark. I bet the people in states that are in Tornado Alley were scared when these events happen. But luckily, many homes in Tornado Alley have storm shelters underground. I would be scared of the dark and the sight of the tornado. I would tell my family about the tornado. What would you do?

Hey Josh! Nice Post. I like how you you gave steps in how a tornado can happen. I would talk to my freinds. Nice Post!
Joshua,
Awesome blog on tornados! I know many people were not warned that a tornado is coming. To answer your question, I would just run down the cellar. If I don't have one, I'd force my mom, dad, and my brother into a car and tell them to drive to someplace safe.
Great blog, Joshua!
I just read a book about tornadoes and it really is quite interesting. I know exactly what hail means. I'm pretty sure it means balls of ice. Anyways, awesome blog!
Joshua,
Cool blog! You described how a tornado forms very nicely. I would be scared, too if a tornado struck. I would just quickly go into the storm shelter.
Very informative blog, Joshua! If there were a tornado, I would tell m family to duck and cover underneath a table.
Good job Joshua! If there were a actual tornado( which probably wouldn't happen), I would probably call my dad at work to get to the basement and tell my family at home to go under a table.
Hi Joshua, nice blog. It was very interesting how a tornado forms. I feel very sorry for the people whose houses got wiped off the map of America. Really interesting blog!
Wow! Joshua tornadoes are very destructive and I am amazed 500,000 homes got broke down. You described how tornadoes form in a very nice way.
Awesome blog, Joshua!
If there was a tornado disaster, I would warn my family and hide in the tornado shelter. I too would be very scared, but I would know lots about it
(because of your blog).
Anyways, informative blog, Josh!
Josh,
What a cool blog! I learned a lot from your information. I, personally, would tell my family to either go into the storm shelter or, hmm! I'm not so sure! Anyway, awesome blog!
Hey dude!
Hey dude! I LOVE your blog. I would absolutely be scared of the dark. Even though here in California we don't have tornadoes, my father made a small, and strong cement cellar so I would feel safe. If a tornado struck and we don't have any where to hide, I would try to save as many family members I have. But my little brother is the most important family member I have. I have promised to god that I would protect him no matter what happens, even if a tornado struck.
Great blog Josh!
I would be so scared during a tornado, I cannot even describe it! If a tornado happens where I live, I would try to find a underground safe spot in my house. As a first grader, I loved to read about tornados. I thought they were very interesting. In most of those tornado books I read, I learned about waterspouts too. They are a kind of tornado that touches down on the water. They are not as deadly as regular tornados though. Your blog reminded me of the movie tornado alley. It was about the states that are in the tornado alley territory, and some of the most deadly tornados that happened there. One of the ways to stay safe during a tornado is to lay down in a ditch outside. Somehow, this protects you from harm. In most places, they will announce that a tornado will touch down on the ground.Once again, great blog Josh!!!!!

Joshua-
Great post! I really wouldn't want to be caught up in a tornado. It would be really scary. Though I do want to be in a hailstorm. It sounds cool. Anyway, Great blog!
Nice post, Josh
You had some interesting facts in there. For example, you were telling us that the higher the wind the faster the tornado.
My answer is that I would tell my parents and I'll pretty sure they'll know what to do.
Great Post Joshua! I never imagined a tornado in California. My dad said if a tornado happens then we would drive up a mountain or at least drive somewhere safe, but I would miss all my stuff at home, so I hope a tornado will never happen here, or anywhere! I don't like hurricanes and tornados, or lightning and thunder. I didn't know that tornados could happen like that! Anyway, cool blog!

Josh,
Awesome Blog!!!!!!! I like how you explained specifically how a tornado occurs. When a tornado occurs, I would tell my family and friends right away and I would quickly go to the storm shelter. I would also be SUPER scared. Anyway, Great Blog!!!!!!!
Hey Joshua,
Cool post! The post really pulled me in! If you want to learn more about twisters(another name for tornadoes), you should go to your local library and read Magic Tree House Research Guide Twisters and Other Terrible Storms.
Hey Joshua,
Tornadoes are pretty cool. I mean, it's probably not cool if you've been in one, but the way they form is very cool. The fastest wind speed recorded in the U.S. was 318 miles per hour, set by a tornado. Because of weather satellites, we can tell which way a tornado is moving and when it will strike. This gives people an hour or two to get ready for a tornado. Did you know that every second, a tornado is raging somewhere in the world? Tornadoes are rated on the Fujita scale, from one to five. If a tornado forms over an ocean and sucks up water, it is called a waterspout. Anyway, awesome blog, Joshua!
Aum Said...
Nice blog Joshua! Tornados are quite frighting. If there was one around my home I will warn my family to get in the basement quickly!A tornado is a violently rotating column of air that is in contact with both the surface of the earth and a cumulonimbus cloud.A tornado can go 260 mph.The word tornado is an altered form of the Spanish word tronada. Did you know that there is a fire tornado and a tornado over water is a watersport. The most record-breaking tornado in recorded history was the Tri-State Tornado, which roared through parts of Missouri, Illinois, and Indiana on March 18, 1925. It was likely an F5, though tornadoes were not ranked on any scale in that era. It holds records for longest path length (219 miles, 352 km), longest duration (about 3.5 hours), and fastest forward speed for a significant tornado (73 mph, 117 km/h) anywhere on Earth. In addition, it is the deadliest single tornado in United States history (695 dead). The tornado was also the second costliest tornado in history at the time, but in the years since has been surpassed by several others if population changes over time are not considered. From Aum.
Awesome blog Joshua! It was very informative. If there was a tornado coming,I would be scared too! I would either tell my mom, dad, sister and brother to drive somewhere safe or I would just tell them to quickly go into a storm shelter. Great job!
Awesome blog Joshua! It was very informational. If there was a tornado headed my way,I would be scared too.I would tell my family to head for a safer place or to go in a storm shelter. Good Job!
Hey Joshua,
Nice Blog!
I enjoyed reading the steps, and the text displayed above and below the steps
When a tornado strikes even though it doesn't happen in CA, I would go in the cellar
Nice blog anyway Joshua!
Nice blog Joshua! I always wondered how tornadoes form and now I've a fair understanding about it's formation. I can now explain about it's creation and it's effects to my friends.
