A LAND OF GIANTS- KINGS CANYON, By Alexander the Explorer

I had a great chance to visit Kings Canyon National Park, located in the Southern Sierra Nevada, east of the San Joaquin Valley. It takes almost four hours to drive there from Bay area.  Visitor activities vary by season and elevation - that varies from 1,370 to 14,494 feet. It’s called the “Land of the Giants because here are the tallest and largest Sequoia trees.  At the beginning, I did not know that “General Sherman” was living there! The landscaping is fabulous and of great variety. The animals that live there are :gray fox, bobcat, striped and spotted skunks, black bear, wood rat, pocket gopher, white-footed mouse, California quail, scrub jay, lizards, goldfinch, acorn woodpecker, gopher snake, California king snake, striped racer, and many more. The animals that I saw were the groundhog which tried to find its way out of his log, the wood pecker- pecking on some wood in search for insects, lizards and a snake.
The most exiting thing was the stillness and quietness of the forest and you could hear only the chirping of the birds.  Finally I got to meet with” General Sherman “which is the tallest and largest redwood tree in the world. Its height is 83.8m tall and width is 33m wide. Research shows that he is about 2,000 years old. This was my only chance to get closer to him and give him a huge hug! But you can guess how many arms did I need to embrace him all around? Good question for a math problem!  To conclude with, for me and my family this trip was the best and the beginning for exploration of more of the Sequoia National Park, too!

Have you ever been to Kings Canyon?

Have you ever seen “General Sherman”?

Hi Alex!

No, I have not went to Kings Canyon nor have seen General Sherman, though I would like to! When we went to camp, the trees were already really big and then there was this tree that was six times my width, now General Sherman, like a whole ton wider than that! Wow! I might have seen it, but I probably don't remember. It's sad I always go to cool places when I'm young and I don't remember.

I have not been to King's Canyon, and I have never seen General Sherman, but I have seen pictures of General Sherman. By the way, you probably need between thirty and seventy arm to fit around General Sherman's trunk. Nice post Alex!

I don't like long car rides, but if I were going, I'd think it was completely worth it. I've never been to Kings Canyon, but I've heard of General Sherman. You're so lucky you got to see General Sherman! I've also seen General Sherman before on google images, but I'm sure seeing that redwood tree in person is even better! I never knew that Kings Canyon is home to so many animals.

Great post, Alexander!

I have never went to Kings Canyon, but I have seen General Sherman in Yosemite. There was one that fell and the roots(the tree was uprooted)were so big that some roots were longer than my house.(My house is not small, it is 2 stories tall, Alice in Wonderland and Humpty Dumpty);) Anyways I bet that you had an awesome trip to Kings Canyon(ou tell that king to let me steal your canyon)

Nice Post Explorer

Dear Alexander the Explorer,

I'm not sure if I have ever been to the Kings Canyon. Maybe when I was very small. I have seen General Sherman. We took a family picture in front of it in the winter. I was not paying attention because I was trying to make a snowball. :)

Sincerely,
Yvonne

Dear Alexander the Explorer,

Nice well written blog, I have never seen General Sherman before nor went to Kings Canyon. Sequoia National Park is something that I have heard of before, I wanted to see General Sherman too. I never knew that General Sherman was 2,000 years old that's a big acomplishment! I wonder how the striped racer, goldfinch, and gopher snake would look like.
Nice blog

Alex,

I've seen General Sherman, but it was only in our science textbook. Let me guess how many arms you needed to get all around it. 100? Or more? I went to Kings Canyon when I was less than a year old. I do remember going to the Grand Canyon in 2009. The canyon is huge! At some points it is more than a mile deep. My trip there was kind of like Outdoor School because the basically only thing we did was hike, hike, and hike some more.
