Winter Thrills -by Mihir Sharma

Have you ever gone skiing or snowboarding?

If you have, I bet you have felt the exhilaration of going down a slope that you weren’t able to go down before.  If you are a snowboarder, you are basically skateboarding (without wheels) except on snow and ice. If you ski, you are going down a slope with your feet attached to two thin strips of wood, plastic and metal.  Imagine that. You are standing at the top of a steep slope covered with bumps, small bits of undergrowth, and rocks that are hidden beneath thin snow.  And you are supposed to go down it. With two strips of wood, plastic and metal on your feet. That is how it feels like when you are going down a Double Black Diamond, which is the hardest slope to go down. The second hardest slope is a regular Black Diamond, which usually isn't as steep. The third hardest is a Blue Square, which doesn't have many bumps or obstacles. And finally, the Green Circle or Bunny Slope, is the easiest slope to go down on, because it isn't steep and has NO obstacles (Blues may have some).
There are three levels of skiing. The safest one is Type 1, in which the ski techs tighten your ski screws just a little bit so that if you fall, your skis will come off and you will not get hurt. It is extremely useful for greens, because there aren't any sharp turns, and the slopes aren't very steep, either. Type 2 has a medium level of safety, where the techs tighten your skis more than they do in Type 1, but less than they do in Type 3. This is most useful for blues, because lots of blues require sharp turns and this type helps you not lose your skis. The least safe one is Type 3, where the techs tighten the screws tight so that your skis will not come off very easily. This is very useful for going down Black Diamonds and Double Black Diamonds because you will not lose your skis. Snowboarders, on the other hand, have only one level, because they have to strap themselves in. I am much better at skiing than I am at snowboarding. But, that is to be expected since I have been skiing since I was six but I snowboarded only. The last time I went to Lake Tahoe, I went down my first Black Diamond EVER!!! It was so much fun that I had to go down it again. I will remember it forever – it was called the Ridge Bowl. I went to a place called Heavenly, and half of it was in Nevada! Plus, it had great views of Lake Tahoe. The actual lake!! It looks way cooler from the top of the mountain and has various shades of blue/aqua. Cool, huh? But you know what’s even cooler? I went to the Nevada side. TWICE!! I was proud of myself after that trip to Heavenly. You should be proud of yourself after YOU do something you enjoy and do it well.

I have a few questions for you.

1. Do you either ski or snowboard?
2. If you ski, what type are you?
3. Do you have a favorite snow sport?

Hi Mihir!

1. I SKI and SNOWBOARD. I'm totally better at skiing though. I tried snowboarding once and I crashed into trees and I gave up and walked down the slope, carrying the snowboard. The paramedics took me down on a snowmobile.
2. In my skiing place, we select your skiing type by 1,2, and 3. I am 2-3, but I just pick 2 because I don't want the skies to be all funny.
3. I am fast at ice skating, but I like skiing.

Nice Post!

Dear Mihir,

I have never went skiing or snowboarding, but it does sound exciting. I don't have a favorite snow sport because I basically don't know any.

Sincerely,

Dear Mihir,
As you stated all those clues, I assumed you had a great time. Even though it is probably scary to go down a slope which is very steep, I would love to go down it. As my Dad always says, "Always go for the safest and the best!". If I were in your place... I would have gone down the slope. No offense, but I think everyone including you have been scared before going down the most dangerous slope with hidden rocks under thin ice, and only with the two plastic/metal/wood feet tightened boards. To end this, I would like to say that CONGRATS ON GOING DOWN THE SLOPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sincerely,

I've skied before, but I never snowboarded. When I went skiing, I went with my sister, and there was a coach. We started by playing red light green light in skis, and then we went on a trail. I remember slipping once, and then falling face-first into the snow. Skiing was fun, and then I practiced going down a hill (with trails to help guide). I fell a couple of times again, but I had a lot of fun.

Awesome post, Mihir!

I have been skiing but never went snowboarding before. I don't like skiing or snowboarding because I just don't like doing it. But if I had a choice I would choose skiing because I am at skiing than snowboarding. I think I am a type one because I have only been skiing twice and I only go on the bunny slope or green circle. My favorite snow sport is to WATCH snowboarding because the snowboarders do awesome tricks like 360s and backflips.

That's all for this week, folks! Be here next week for Anish's blog comments(dun durudun dun dun... dun dun dun dun)
NICE BLOG, MIHIR!!!

I ski. I don't know what you mean by what type I am, but I'll just say that I am intermediate. Skiing is FUN!!!! I love Mount Rose. It is tall, steep, and has COOL pathways like the wild horse. It is steep and filled with bumps, SUPER sharp turns, and slopes. I forgot to answer #3. I love skiing and tubing. Have you been tubing? It is so fun!

I prefer skiing although i'v never tryed snowboarding. So i might just say I don't know which one i like most. I ski on hills that are ranked Blue somtimes i ski on green. So i guess I am in type two skiing. I like skiing as my faavorite snow sport. Do you like skiing or snowboarding more?

Mihir,

No, I do not ski, and I also do not snowboard. I used to take ice-skating classes. The level before I quit, Angela and I ended up in the same class. Skating's the only snow sport I know, unless snowball fighting counted as a sport [which it doesn't]. The last time I played in the snow, we had a lot of snowball fights, kids vs. parents. We usually got the parents by surprise.

I have went skiing. I wanted to go snowboard this spring break but I don't know if I am going or not. I am a mediate skier and I ride on Castle Peek Quad. I like riding down long hills. I once had a snowball that I dropped on the ski lift.

I've been never been snowboarding but I've been skiing. We once went skiing with our friend and I lost my ski on the trail so they went ahead while I put it back on and when I caught up my friend persuaded my sister to take a "shortcut" through powder snow and my sister got stuck. My friend had to take off her skis to help but when they got out she couldn't put them back on. She finally got them on and we skied down. The whole experience took an hour.Guess I'm type 2.... I really love ice skating I can spin :) but that was 4 years ago :( now I can only skate on one leg for 5 seconds.....

Dear Mihir I have never went snowboarding or skiing before. I do not have a favorite snow sport because I do not think I ever played a snow sport before. Even though I never have played a snow sport before I have played in the snow and I like it. In the times I played in the snow, I have sledded, done snowball fights, and done stuff like shoveling in the snow. NIce blog post -Mihir Sharma

Dear Mihir, I have never ever been snowboarding or skiing before or I never ever I think did any snow sport. I only played in the snow doing stuff like snowball fight, looking at the snow testing stuff out, or just doing work like shoveling the snow. I went sledding too but the snow was really steep and I think it looked like I would fall of trying to sled. I also went to Lake Tahoe before but I never did any snow sport there. Nice blog--_ Master of Skiing (Mihir Sharma);P :p

Mihir,
I Have been skiing before, but I want to try snowboarding even though I need to get use to falling on my butt. I think I am level three because I can go on blacks. (pretty cool "for a girl")I was impressed by my self the first time I went on black, because I was NERVOUS!!!. I do not have a favorite snow sport also.
Terrific post!!!!!!!!!!

Mihir, to answer your questions, number one: I like to ski. When I was little I took snowboarding lessons, but I had no interest, so I took skiing lessons instead. Number two: I am a type two, and I have been a type two for a while now. That is because I only get two or three days of lessons PER YEAR! Number three: My favorite snow sport is jumping into a mound of snow and then throwing snowballs at people because you're in a snow fort, basically.

I skied once, but I have never snowboarded. I like ice skating. I am really good. Can you believe I have only seen snow TWICE!!! Once last Feb, and the other I was too young to remember... I don't know what type I am. When I went skiing, I quit half way through my lesson. Now I wish I hadn't...

Dear Mihir,

I ski. I have never snowboarded before. I like to go on Blue trails since they are faster than Green trails but not too fast. I am pretty sure that I use Type 2 skis. My favorite snow sport is to ski.

(P.S-. Great Post!)

Dear Mihir,

I was very happy to read your blog, because I like skiing too! This winter we went to Kirkwood where we skied on many different kinds of slopes. I also went to ski school where they put me in the advanced class but I mainly ski with my family.
My favorite snow sports are sledding and skiing.

Love,
Alex
