Up and Down Masada- By Jonathan Neduva

My older brother, Dan, is a soldier in the Isreali Army.  He is twenty-two years old and has lived in Tel-Aviv, Israel for the past four years.  Dan lives on the base sometimes and has another home in the city.  This past December, just before Chanukkah (a Jewish holiday my family celebrates), I visited Israel and I got to see my brother on the base. The army base has a soccer and volleyball court that the soldiers use when they are not training.  There are a lot of army cars and tanks.  There is one car that is all armor and it is designed to throw grenades. Every army vehicle has a code on it made of numbers and letters, like a license plate.  When you want to take pictures on the base, you are not allowed to take pictures of the codes on these vehicles.  They contain private information.
Dan’s daily training is really tough. A part of his training is to climb to the top of Masada, an old abandoned town at the top of a mountain.  He has to climb up and down the mountain twenty times in one day.  From the top of Massada, you can see the Dead Sea.  The Dead Sea is famous for being covered in salt.  The Dead Sea is actually underground.  It has a depth of 100,000 feet!
I miss my brother a lot.  If you had a brother or sister who lived away from you and only visited on vacations, would you miss them too?

Dear Jonathan,
Yes, if I had my brother go away I wouldn't really miss him, because first of all he is very annoying and he is nice sometimes.Though your brother works hard.I don't really know what you do when you become a soldier.Climbing up to the top of the Masada is hard.If I ever climbed on top of the Masada I would probably fall of like 100 times, because I am not really strong.

Hi Jonathan!

Wow, it's hard to believe that one of your siblings are away. In a war, will he fight (maybe against USA)? What are the consequences if you took a picture of the code? Why does he have to climb on Masada everyday? How does he climb it?

Nice Post though :P

wow!I did not know that army trucks and tanks had codes!the training seems very intense!did you know that
the the dead sea is very easy to float on, it is because it is less dense.

Jonathan,

Wow! 20 times up and down a moutain is a LOT. It would be kind of like doing the mile run over 100
times a day! Do the army people get breaks in between, or do they have to keep going until they are done? Besides climbing mountains, what else do soldiers have to do to train? To answer your question, yes, I would miss a sibling who lived away from me (if I had one) and rarely visited. I don't think I would want a sibling in the army, but I have to admit, it is a cool job to have.

oIn the beginning, I wouldn't miss them because my sister hits me a lot, and doesn't let me have a turn on the quick computer. After a while, I would miss her a lot. She is sometimes nice, but she ignores me a lot, and rolls her eyes when I try to tell her something. When she hits me, I tell my mom but my mom is getting annoyed, so she yells at my sister. *smiles evilly*

Nice post, Jonathan!

Wow, that sounds so interesting! I hate running, let alone climbing. I have one question. Are the codes actually on the license plate or are they carved into the vehicle? My uncle is in the army. I do not know which one though. He has a lot of award thingys. Also, how tall is the mountain Masada? Has your brother ever gotten injured? In a lot of movies they say when someone is injured in the army, they lose hope and faith. I know one country where for the injury part, your spirit has gone and fought the war and comes and goes.

Yes! I will miss him if he lived far away. Did he even go to a single war yet? Or is he just training?

Though I have very horrible brother I would miss him. It must be sad to have a brother who only been with you for five years. At least your brother is in one of the worlds strongest army. My bother is a 7 year old weirdo who loves video games and hates work. The good thing about having that type of brother he can do a lot of cheats to pass the game. Also he knows a lot about video games than I do and has a lot more time to them ( not a good thing). Anyways, all those weapons sound so cool. Do they have a gun that shoots grenades? Has he got in war before with any country? It must be cool to have a bro like him.

If someone close to me lived far far way and only visited on vacations, I would you miss them. That happened in the Red Pyramid. Carter and Sadie were split away and can only be seen together one day a year. I think Dan is all the way up the mountain!!! Call him.

Interesting Post Jonathan, and I do not have a brother or sister which lives away from me but I do have cousins in India or America or somewhere in the world. I do think of them but that is not my brother or sister and they are cousins or something else. For those who are going away from your parents the parents are going to miss you alot while you are having fun.

Hi Jonathan! I do not have a sibling, so I won't miss anyone when it's not vacation. I think it's really cool that your brother, Dan, is in the army. I really like watching clips where people explain battles with red and blue bars in a suitcase. I really find the army interesting. In a book, I read about a town just like Masada, except it was called Maashava. Great post!

If my sister lived away from home and only visited on vacations, I would miss her. I would have no one to play with or talk to on long rides like to Los Angeles. We went to Los Angeles to go to Disneyland. Also, the house would be boring since it would be so quiet. I usually talk to my sister a lot. As you can see, I don't want my sister to live away from home.

Nice blog, Jonathan. Have you seen a real grenade(one that can be activated)? It must feel cool to have a brother in the army. I have only one brother but in my opinion, he is the best sibling I could ever have. If I had a sibling who was away all the time, I would miss them too.
