Movie Making
by Ishika Shah

You’ve definitely watched a movie before, but have you ever wondered how a movie is made? Wondered how Superman ‘flies’? How light comes out from Harry Potter’s wand? The answer: special effects. Oh, and to find the answer to the first one, keep reading. Movie making is a long process, but it might be interesting to watch.
Before the filming for a non-animated movie begins, a few things are needed. The first thing on the scavenger hunt list is a crew of a directors, actors, cameramen, a producer, and many others. Next is the area for filming, and the first few sets. Finally, the actors need a script that tells them what to say and do.
Lights, camera, action! It’s filming time. Scenes are pretty long, so they are filmed in shorter parts that are only a couple minutes long. Each part is filmed many times. It gets a bit boring for the crew, but it provides choices. The best one is used in the final movie. Everything is filmed with a camera that takes very quick pictures, usually at the rate of about 24 per second! The voice is recorded seperately. The scenes are not performed in order. Everything that happens in one place is filmed, then everything that happens in another place is filmed, and so on.
Sometimes, actors need to be shown doing things that are impossible in real life. That’s when special effects are used. For example, when a super hero is shown flying, ropes are used to move the actor through the air. Using a computer, the ropes are erased. Another way to do it is to record the actor and the background searately, and then combine the two using a computer. If the actor does not know how to do something or there’s a dangerous stunt the actor must perform, a stunt double performs that bit for the actor. The stunt double looks very similar to the actor. Sometimes, objects are inserted using a computer. That’s called graphics.
Often, movies are animated. There are two types of animation. Usually, pictures are drawn as in Madagascar. Every picture is a bit different than the one before it. When the pictures are shown quickly, it looks like movement. Sometimes, puppets are used as in Elmo. The puppets are set, a picture is taken, the puppets are moved a bit, a picture is taken, and so on. These pictures are also shown quickly to look like movement.
After filming, a few things happen. The different bits are put together to make the movie. The many pictures are printed on a few long rolls of film. The voice track is next to the pictures. Then the film is taken to the theater for everyone to get some popcorn, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!
Next time you see a movie, think about these things. I challenge you to see if  you can find one place where special effects were used! Also, if you know an interesting fact about movie making and I did not include it, please share it with me.

Wow! I never knew how movies were made. It's pretty cool. Too bad movie making takes a long time. I wish movie making took a little less time. I used to wonder how movies were made, but now I know!

I have watched a movie before. I never knew that making movies took so much effort, so I'm happy I just have to watch the movie and not make it. My sister always told me about special effects. Since my sister watches PG-13 rated movies, my mom would get worried that the movie was a bad influence on me. Then my sister would get really annoyed and say that it was okay because everything un-realistic is just special effects.

Nice post Ishika!

Hi Ishika!

I've watched a lot of movies on DVD lately. One of them were Legends of the Guardians. It's cartoon picture movement just like you said. But the funny thing about this one is that it is made from the book series Guardians of Ga'Hoole and I think that it used pictures from the author. I also watched Cats and Dogs, a bit of Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2, and I watched Alpha and Omega.

Nice Post!

Ishika, your blog about movies has many interesting things that I didn't know earlier. To the point. Animated films that I have seen are: Monsters vs. Aliens, Cars 2, & Monsters incorporated(with it's eye as the dot of the I). Believe me, these are only some of the animated films I've watched. Well, got to go!

Dear Ishika,

I have learned a lot from you! :) Once in my summer camp in the afternoon, we made a "movie", we made it by getting each a long piece of paper. We drew little pictures on them and putted them in a wheel like thing with slots to see the pictures. I drew a tree growing and some coconuts falling. Remember in kindergarten and 1st grade in science, we drew two pictures and glued them on a straw? It was kind of fun. I drew apples falling off a tree.

In the movie Avatar, special effects are used. For example, they filmed a camera using a camera. And how do you think they got the dragons and the floating land to suspend? Avatar is clearly a movie with many special effects, and I advise that you watch it. It is, however, violent, and violent movies cost a lot of money to make. That is because of all the blood and weapons. Anyways, nice post Ishika!

Great blog post! I learned many things about the steps of how they make the movie. In my family we rarely watch movies because my sister and I are a little bit sensitive when the movie shows something scary. I watched the movie Madagascar and I was a little bit scared. Like you said when people go to movies, they get popcorns, soda and more.
I have few questions for you.
1.What is your favorite movie?
2.Where do you watch the movies?
3.How many movies have you watched so far?

Movie making is really awesome. It is so cool that the camera can take super fast pics. The actors sometimes have to mouth words and then talk at the same rate and speed. Sounds hard! Another cool thing I found in special effects is that the props people work very hard to rip up snow. It has to be the same size and they have to be realistic. Two more things. One: in the twilight movie Jacob has a fake tattoo. One thing that went wrong is that it kept moving out of place. The other is when there are talking animals the director gives them treats then a person speaks for them. Rain or shine the actors still have to do the scene. They just put up tarps. Cool right? Movie making is a blast!

Dear Ishika,
Your blog was great. I really liked it, especially because it talked about movie making which really interests me a lot. I learned one new thing from your blog and it's that the movie makers take multiple photos of the shot and choose the best. And another question, where did you get all this information from? I get my information from my dad, he teaches me a lot. All-in-all, your blog is great!
Sincerely,
Agent Secret

nizMovie making is so EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!I once watched this T.V.(sounds like tee vee)show called science behind the movies. I watched one episode where it shows how it look like an ax going at someone's heart. First, they made a paper mold and took a picture of someone throwing an ax and then they taped the same fake ax on another actor and he pretended to die, and the they took a picture of that and combined the two pictures together, making it look like an ax being thrown at a person.
NICE POST, ISHIKA!

Wow! I can't believe it takes such a long process to make a movie. I never knew making a movie was so hard.

It seems like hard work to make a movie. I never knew it took so much work to make a movie. I recently finished several movies on DVDs. They were Cars 2 and Rio. Both of these movies were animated. My favorite special effects were in the Alvin and the Chipmunks movies where they combine filmed sections with some computer animation.
