Meerkats- by Anish

Meerkats dens:by Anish

Do you know about Meerkats ? Well here is some interesting information about meerkats. After reading this you will really like meerkats.
Meerkats are small animals that dig a lot. They have dens under the ground. Meerkats live together in dens. They sometimes share the den with the yellow mongoose and the ground squirrel. Their dens have about 70 holes to enter from. that”s a lot of holes! they are  members of the mongoose family. A meerkat family could be called a clan, mob or gang. A big clan of meerkats are called super families with about 50 members,a regular group of meerkats  have about 20 members. They could live for 12 years to 14 years. In  Dutch, meerkat means lake cat. It’s also known as sun angel, so it is believed that they protect people from the werewolf which eats cattle and tribesman. They only weigh 731 grams! their belly is black so it can absorb heat in the morning  after a cold night so it won’t be cold. They’re about only 10 inches tall! Their claws are two inches long for digging an making their dens. Meerkats eat scorpions, worms, spiders, snakes, lizards, small mammals, plants, eggs and other stuff. When they eat animals with venom they don’t get hurt. They could have 5-6 pups in one litter, but 3 is the most common amount of pups in a litter.
Have you seen and fed meerkats in a zoo?

I have seen a meerkat but never fed it. I've seen a meerkat in the San Fransisco Zoo before. I think they looked kind of cute. I like lemurs, tigers, lions, giraffes, and all sorts of animals at the zoo. Going to the zoo is really fun because you get to see all sorts of animals. If there is a new kind of animal, then everyone rushes to the cage and sees it. So that is the really exciting part about going to the zoo, which is getting to see new types of animals, and feeding them.

Nice Post Anish!

Cool Post Anish! I have never seen Meerkats in the zoo and I have never fed them! You had some cool facts. I never knew that the Meerkat's belly are black so they can absorb heat in the morning after a cold night. I hope next time I go to the zoo I see Meerkats!

I haven't been in a zoo in a long time, so I don't remember if I have seen meerkats there before. But I'm pretty sure I have seen them. However, I don't think I've fed them before, because I would've remembered that! I've always thought that meerkats are really cool though.

Nice post Anish. I've never known that much about meerkats. I have seen them a few times in zoos, but never got to feed them. I have three questions though. First of all, did you ever feed meerkats and if you did what did you feed them? My second question is how do meerkats survive when they eat venomous beings? Does it have something to do with there tongues or are they just immune to poison? My last question is what is there overall population? Are they endangered or safe from being extinct?

Hello Anish I have never fed a meerkat in my life in the zoo,but the best thing I like about the Meerkat is that they have a black belly so it could absorb heat in the morning so it won't be cold in the night for them and I'm even fascinated that they have at least 70 holes to enter from to there den plus the super families are about 50 members so thats cool.I never knew that the animal is in the mongoose family I always thought that they were in the cat family so know I know.Nice blog and I'm going to say once more I have never fed an meerkat and never saw one before. Well, AWOSOME blog:Shrirang

I don't think I have ever seen a meerkat but I might have. After reading what you said I think I want to see one. I wonder how big a meerkat baby would be if a meerkat is only 10 inches. Have you ever seen a meerkat at a zoo or somewhere? I found out that Meerkats have babies around every 75 or 76 days. I looked at some pictures of Meerkats and they look very very cute and friendly. I wonder how big their holes are?

NICE BLOG!!!!!!

I have seen meerkats at the zoo before but have never fed any. After reading this blog, I think meerkats are really interesting. I used to watch this movie on discovery channel called "Meerkat Manners". I used to think it was boring and that meerkats were lame. This blog told me more about them and now I can appreciate them. Nice blog Anish!

No, I have not seen a meerkat before in a zoo or outside. Some other information is that the name Meerkat comes from the Afrikaans. The English meaning is marsh cat, although Meerkats don't live near marshes and they are not cats. Their proper scientific name is Suricata suricatta. They were first named in 1776.

NICE POST ANESH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never even heard of the meerkat before to be honest. The meerkats seem to be interesting acording to what you have have wrote. Maybe I have seen them before but I'm not sure. It's interesting that they share their den with the yellow mongoose and the ground squirrel. When I saw a super family has about 50 menbers I thought this was really interesting.

I have not seen any meerkats before. Not even at the zoo! In fact, I didn't went to a zoo when I was 5 years old. I think I have seen a meerkat once when I was 6 years old. It was digging under the bushes. My mom took out a shovel and smashed the meerkat dead she than buried the meerkat. I feel sorry for it.

I have seen Meerkats before on television, but I have never felt one before. I'm not really interested in zoos because I do not really find them fascinating so I don't usually go to zoos. I don't really know anything on Meerkats. I have some questions though. 1. Are people allowed to keep Meerkats as pets? 2. Why did you do your blog topic on Meerkats? 3. How can you tell the difference between a male Meerkat and a female Meerkat?

I have never seen a meerkat in my life. When I go to the zoo, I don't feed them (Of course! I've never seen one, so how could I feed one?). I wish one day to see one. Meerkats live in the desert. In fact, since my biome (for the project) was the desert, I came across meerkats. Why, I had no idea meerkats were so interesting! At first, I guess I underestimated them. I would really want to feed one. As you said, after reading your great blog, I would really like meerkats. Of course I like them now! Why not? Anyways, great post Anish!

I don't really know about meerkats and I didn't see one in real life. I saw one on TV in Alvin and the Chipmunks the Squeakuel. They sort of look like monkeys with the long tails.

I have seen a meerkat but never fed one before. When I went to the Singapore Zoo I saw meerkats for the 11th time but these meerkats came out of their home and lined up biggest to smallest! I didn;t know that meerkats could be that smart.

I never got to see or feed a real meerkat bfore but they do seem very interessting. The last time I went to a zoo was in Las vegas. They had dolphins in pools. Next to it all the land animals were there. There were cheetahs, a lot of different tigers, snakes, a rihno, and etc. I think I actually might have saw a meerkat sleeping next to the lion's cage. The most exciting were the awake lions! We were really lucky to see it awake, roaring, and the zookeeper feeding it!

Hey Anish! Okay I'll admit that I have never seen a Meerkat in real life before, though I've seen them on Animal Planet and on Discovery Channel. On Animal Planet the guys placed tracking tags on the "leaders" of some groups. Did you know that some of the leaders were females!!! It turns out there is always a guard at each opening and they always hunt in groups. They will actually fight against other groups for territory. And on T.V. I saw that on group was doing an ambush on another group by covering some of the other groups holes withrocks and then chasing them out of their own territory.
Also did you know that on Discovery Channel they said they could moniter tham from thousands of miles away. I still wonder about many things on meerkats such as #1 How long can their tunnels be? #2 What if there is an intruder in the tunnel? #3 What will they do if they get hurt? These are all questions on meerkats. As you can see they are really great animals.

I have probably never seen a meercat before and definatly did not feed one. Do you know if those holes near the edge of the playground belong to meer cats? What are yellow mongoose and ground squirrils? I am pretty sure that meercats belong to the weasel family.
Nice post Anish!
